This is another entry in Ms. Chesney's series of parodies of Regency-ers novels, in this case The Poor Relations series. They are all written in a spirit of fun and often more than a bit far fetched but that is part of their charm. Like the others, it details the attempts of one of the "Poor Relations", penniless gentry, to find money to keep their mutually owned hotel afloat. While they're at it they usually manage to find a suitable marriage for some distressed (but beautiful and intelligent) young woman. The basic notion is that several penniless members of the minor nobility, tiring of their parlous state decide to open a hotel. This of course means that they have "gone into trade". This is a horrible fate that threatens to worsen their already tenuous social standing (status being all important during that period). All this leads to series of tong in cheek romps that are good fun if not tone taken seriously.Product details

Colonel Sandhurst to the Rescue The Poor Relation Series Book 5 edition by M C Beaton Romance eBooks Reviews
Another in the series of Poor Relations. Very interesting story lines, romantic with humor.
This was another entertaining book in the series. I was kept in suspense almost the whole story. I am a fan of MC Beaton, and I was not disappointed.
Just when you think one of M.C. Beaton's novels couldn't get any better, you find one that does. Such twists and turns, such skillfully crafted twists and turns! This was a most enjoyable story, I can't get enough!
The entire series of the Poor Relations books make delightful, light reading. In each a poor girl finds romance with a titled and/or rich man (fantasy abounds!) and the owners of the hotel face the challenges of keeping afloat. Among the few books where older characters are as interesting as the young ones. Lots of period detail including clothes, décor, horses and carriages, manners, and food. Highly recommended for those seeking light, entertaining, upbeat stories.
I find the M.C. Beaton historical fiction romance a parody on the normal bodice ripping romances. I am not a fan of the bodice rippers, but M.C. Beaton's sly humor is delightful. She provides a clever plot, usually with several sub plots, and enhances the story with information about live in Victorian England from the clothes and styles, to the food and daily lives of the aristocracy to what happens below stairs. These books are a total diversion from life today which make them a fun way to escape for a few hours and relax. A bit like having a bowl of popcorn and a silly movie, then back to real life.
I have really enjoyed this series. I have read a few of Ms. Beaton's from start to finish. I enjoyed all the characters in the book. The action, adventure and mayhem are cute and keep the plot moving. The author knows how to tell a story and she also knows when the story is done.
This book was a trifle sadder than previous installments in tone. The plot was not as intricate as books 3 and 4 but the heroine was amusing and her Hero tolerable if a tad two dimensional. I had high hopes for Jason Davy, but I just don't know after finishing this one. This book felt a little like a transitional book between 4 and 6 rather than standing on its own. But it is well-written, the recurring characters were on their mettle and the Prince once again favored the hotel. A pleasing read. Highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
